On July 30 2016 Club 456 attended the Boxer Battle in Saskatoon Saskatchewan hosted at Wyant Group Raceway. This event is a great time attack/solo event that began a few years ago first as a Subaru meet, then became a Subaru vs. Mitsubishi meet and has now evolved into an all makes meet.

The evolution of this event and its roots causes the field to be predominantly Subaru and Mitsu powered and creates a great make vs. make atmosphere. The meet was overall a lot of fun with friendly people attending and an aura of mutual respect.

The time attack style event used the large concrete oval of Wyant Group Raceway as the canvas and had a plethora of twists and turns carved out using pylons. This created a very cool mix of high-speed straights and very technical elements. Overall the event was meant to level the playing field between high power cars and low power cars and allow some unclassed racing to take place.
Due to the course design the classic autocross type cars had a slight advantage over the all out power of the roadcourse designed cars. Club 456 Driver Marcin “Mr. Lancer” Derewonko placed 2nd overall in a 30 car field with several 500hp+ cars.

The surface of the track was said to be very slippery bordering on dangerous. This is absolutely not the case if you run a tire with a treadwear rating of 200 or less. After experiencing the surface I soon realized that a good percentage of the field were showing up with either worn tires or regular “performance” type tires whose compound is really more for longevity than for the track. If you are running a track oriented tire you will be fine keeping in mind the concrete oval is surrounded by a quite unforgiving cement wall.

The event was a very long day as there were several track configuration changes to keep the runs interesting. The event this year sold out in a few hours as there were only 35 or so spots sold. If you are interested in competing at this track event I would recommend following the Boxer Battle page on facebook and jumping on it as soon as the tickets are advertised. It is definitely worth the trip.
